Legendary Croatian footballer Ivan Rakitic has announced the end of his playing career. There has been speculation for a long time that Rakitic will take over as the new sporting director of Hajduk, Rakitic’s last club in his career, Goran Vučević.
He has not confirmed this yet, but his playing career is over. Rakitic announced his retirement with an emotional video on his Instagram profile, writing in the caption: “Dear football, I have a special letter for you” – alluding to the move by legendary basketball player Kobe Bryant, who published a poem on the eve of his final professional season: “My dear basketball”.
Rakitic was born in Switzerland, where he played for Basel, before moving to German giants Schalke. He then moved to Spain, where he played for European giants Sevilla and Barcelona, making over 300 appearances for both clubs. He then played a season in the Middle East before spending his final season in Croatia, with Hajduk.
He won the World Silver Medal with Croatia in 2018, and was one of the best players at the tournament.
